Rating the id Games

Main Post:

How would you rank the id shooters?

Based on the base games, here’s my ranking:

1: The Ultimate Doom 2: DOOM 2016 3: Quake 4: Wolfenstein 3D 5: Quake 2 6: Doom II 7: Doom Eternal 8: Doom 3 9: RAGE

I never played Quake 3.

Top Comment: Let's see... This is tough. Quake 1 Doom 2 (I'd lump Ultimate Doom in this as well because it's the same era, and there's not many differences. That era is defined by Doom 2. Quake 3 Doom 2016 Wolf 3D / Spear Quake 2 Doom Eternal Doom 3 Rage The only bad game here is Rage, and even then, it was only due to a lot of half-baked ideas done better by other studios. It looked phenomenal, had great animation and the gunplay was solid. Nod a big fan of the newer style of Doom with Eternal. I can appreciate how they distilled the formula, and I loved the speed and movement. but something about it didn't quite click for me. Dark Ages looks good though. I'll give it a go. Quake 2 was fun, and it's a striking difference from the original. The slower pace doesn't do it for me anymore though. Q2 filled up a chunk of time in my teens. Great memories. Strangely enough - I liked Doom 3's slower pace, its use of lighting and how it leaned into horror. You could take that now, and really do something disturbing and fun with it. I don't think it went far enough at the time. Plus monster closets get old. Hell was cool though! On it's release in 2004, I think people just wanted a classic Doom game. Plus the multiplayer was meh. As for hits, Q1, Doom 2 and Quake 3 were monumental. Quake 1 paved the way for TCP/IP multiplayer. Doom 2 because it truly is an everlasting game with all its mods and source ports. Quake 3 made 3d acceleration required, and the norm. Plus it had multiplayer that was a joy to play AND watch.

Top Comment: Tried the Forgotlings demo. Its combat focused and bad at that. Which is really irritating if you liked their previous game Forgotton Anne as that was a pretty good cinematic puzzle plattformer

(Id software games) Doomguy, BJ and the Quake Ranger are all reincarnations of the same person

Main Post:

Basically, the Doom Marine and BJ aren't distant cousins as some speculate, but could be the same person popping up across space and time as some kind of anomaly who crops up whenever a great evil is present (demons/Nazis). Both are very similar in abilities, appearance, personality (though the Marine doesn't have all that much personality outside of 'kill kill kill'), and motives. Furthermore, the Doom game from 2016 established that the Marine is an ancient, almost godlike force. A force that could theoretically manifest across all of history when needed.

As for the Quake guy, I guess he could theoretically factor in too.

This is just a personal speculation/headcanon of mine that I've been nursing for a while, I know some folks probably prefer the idea that BJ and Doomguy are distant relatives, and that's okay.

What happened to id software?

Main Post:

What in the hell happened? id Software has always developed the best FPS games and pushed the boundaries of what can be done. Where have they disapeared to? Why have they not made any new games? Sequals with better engines are great and all, but I want something new. Where is the talent? What happened to John Romero?

Top Comment: A series of fuck ups. John Romero was an amazing game designer who decided to tell people he was making the next most amazing game ever before he even started the project. Daikatana was supposed to be Half Life 3, for all intents of purposes, and ended up being a broken uninspired piece of shit. Strike 1. Doom 3 was supposed to be a return to the world of space marines, demons and rad fucking metal. It was instead too dark, too slow, too predictable and it didn't sell as well as it should have. Strike 2. Rage was supposed to be the masters of FPS dabbling with some RPG elements to bring something new and exciting to the table. Instead, they decided to test out new everything, including an engine, and made a broken unoptimized piece of shit. Strike 3. On top of all of this, the rest of the industry was happily moving forward while they kept trying to reinvent a wheel they created in the first place. Hubris. John Romero happened to John Romero.

Who's the next id Software?

Main Post:

Since the 2009 takeover of id Software by ZeniMax, id's been slowly hollowed out and converted into yet another conventional, big budget, triple-A game development studio—as if that's what the fans always wanted. Not this id fan.

I submit that part of what made id Software and its games "Wolfenstein 3D" and "DOOM" so bad ass was how rebellious and controversial they were. id was able to do what they did because they were independent and not beholden to corporate masters.

So as violent and gory as "DOOM" (2016) was, and as metal as it tried to be, none of these things pushed the envelope. The moral panic over violence and gore in games along with demons and pentagrams has since been normalized and accepted by mainstream society. We forget that what "DOOM" (1993) had that "DOOM" (2016) lacks is this element of rebellion. Without it, this latest installment fails to create anything that will last the test of time.

Nothing in the new "DOOM" even remotely shocked or stirred me like how the original had. "DOOM" (2016) gave us another PG-13 template of hell, not too unlike "DOOM 3's," watered down and fashioned in an expected manner, seemingly designed not to invoke strong emotion. Hell in "DOOM" (2016) is the product of salaried devs in cubicles in a corporate office, Monday through Friday, rather than from an artist's tireless, unrelenting vision. Want an uncensored, original take on hell? Check out Wayne Barlow's incredible work on "Dante's Inferno."

If I sound like I'm mocking the current careerist game developer who sells out their artistry and ownership for a steady paycheck from a publisher, I am. Because I think my biggest annoyance with the game development/publishing industry is in general how willingly it forfeited its counterculture for the banality of a workaday, corporate America-esque lifestyle. It's the same tragic phenomenon that overtook Hollywood. These American game developers nowadays no longer resemble volatile young artists, developers, and eccentrics like they did in the 90s but instead predictable conformist cogs with predictable nuclear families working in a field that has also turned nauseatingly predictable.

The only developers I can think of right now that have bucked this trend, are independent, and have done something truly rebellious and provocative in the past five years like id Software did in the 90s are Destructive Creations with the release of "Hatred."

Call "Hatred" 'edgy' like every parrot out there (I seriously don't understand this word and how many people deploy it as if it were some sort of dagger; seems like an attempt to dismiss something people find dangerous), "Hatred" was radical in its nihilism and tone. While not totally original or mature, even half-baked it was utterly bold, timely, and far more daring, particularly with how typical mass shootings have become, than what I'm seeing out of big studios.

tl;dr: Who's consistently creating good, independent, dangerous, controversial games these days like id Software used to?

Top Comment:

ID games werent good because they were controversial. They were good because they were well made games

Even today all I play is Quake Live, Quake 3, Quakeworld or some sort of game inspired by Quake, Doom or another ID product because they are so damn good

Recently they did Doom which wasnt contoversial sure, but thats not an important factor for me. It was a great game and really brought ID back to form.

Now they are working on Quake Champions. I have my concerns as an avid quake player, but ultimately I'm excited. Pro Quake players all seemed to enjoy it and gave feedback and criticisms to the team which is comforting.

So in answer to your Question, I hope that the next ID software is ID software. And it all hangs on Quake Champions. If they can release a sick Doom game AND a sick Quake game in a modern market then I will be ecstatic and in my eyes they will be back

Id software recruiting for a combat director with knowledge of Doom and Doom Eternal. Is this for a new Doom, or for Quake?

I seem to recall that Doom Eternal would be the last game in this current series. Maybe that's changed or they're looking to include a more Doom like experience in Quake?

The Person That Destroyed Id Software From Within

Main Post: The Person That Destroyed Id Software From Within

Top Comment: Sandy Petersen doesn't mention the "snake" by name, but it is generally accepted that he is talking about Tim Willits. That outright refuses to mention Tim Willits in this video about Quake https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUeu96TKQwU cements his animosity towards him. The allegation is that Tim Willits (who has since left id Software and now runs Saber) was heavily involved in driving Adrian Carmack, John Romero, American McGee, and others from the studio, through manipulation of John Carmack and intentionally sabotaging other employees by giving them advice he know would put them in Carmack's bad graces. This is further reinforced by people like Romero openly criticizing Willits over claims he made back in 2017 about his involvement in Quake's development. American McGee has described Tim Willits as a " serial credit thief ", although he has never directly accused Willits of sabotaging his job at id Software.

Who else hates modern id software compared to old id software?.

Main Post: Who else hates modern id software compared to old id software?.

Top Comment:

Real boomers that are stuck in the past or close minded people who tend to also gatekeep usually.

I love both. The hate is just really dumb

The old were essentially the foundation for the future of FPS with their games being timeless. (Except for RAGE imo)

The new has a ton of built up potential being a team that grew up loving id Software games. The two new DOOM games + DLC were fantastic and are a perfect example of how to advance the classic FPS formula (although I prefer more open ended levels which 2016 was able to do sometimes). I cannot wait to see what else they come up with and to see how they reboot Quake.

I don't know if I can say the same for the id Software team working on QC since that's another department entirely collabing with Sabre. And their progress is horribly slow. But that's probably because of Bethesda executives giving them less resources since it doesn't make them millions.

If they reminded me how much I loved DOOM, I want to see what they would do with Quake.
